IAOart – Artist Statement
My passion for painting begins with finding and photographing a subject (or subjects) out in the natural world, both here locally and during my travels around the globe. I then strive to bring these subjects and their corresponding backgrounds to life in another form through a painting, using a variety of surfaces, styles, and paint types. The overall experience becomes an intimate connection with specific butterflies, birds, plants, landscapes, and even turtles and monkeys, as the photo I took evolves into a work of original art created inside my home studio in Lebanon Springs, NY. Feel free to stop by if you’re in the area!
In terms of a style mine can best be described as a hyper-realistic subject(s) combined with an often abstract interpretation of the background. After more then two decades spent writing novels of literary fiction I took a break from words about seven years ago and began making small paintings in acrylic on paper. After a few years practicing I began incorporating oil paint, often in conjunction with acrylic, using a variety of surfaces and framing styles. Some outliers in my works include cityscapes, bird and butterfly portraits, and a reproduction of a famous Monet.
I am forty-eight years old, and live with my wife Ana and son Xander in an old farmhouse in northern Columbia County, NY. Please feel free to inquire directly in the future for purchasing originals, prints in a variety of styles (stretched canvas, unframed canvas, giclee photo or velvet paper, gator foam board mounting), and commissioned pieces. All orders are shipped directly to the customer via UPS. Thank you sincerely for your interest in my work.
